Nelson’s Helps Poultry Days Officially Become Home to the World’s Largest Chicken Barbecue

What began as a one-day celebration in the small village of Versailles, Ohio, has grown into something legendary—and Nelson’s has been there through it all. At the 74th annual Poultry Days, Versailles proudly claimed the title of the World’s Largest Chicken Barbecue, with a record-breaking 40,179 chicken dinners cooked during the June 13–15 weekend.

And behind every one of those perfectly grilled, flavorful chicken? Nelson’s.

On June 15, community leaders, volunteers, and longtime supporters gathered in the old gym on the Versailles school fairgrounds for an official ceremony to mark this historic achievement. Nelson’s was honored to be included in the celebration, not only as the longtime caterer but as a proud partner in making this incredible milestone possible.

A Family Legacy That Fuels a Festival

Representing Nelson’s at the event was Tad Gongwer, third-generation owner of the family business, which has played a central role in Poultry Days for decades. Tad’s grandfather engineered the original Port-A-Pit machine that’s become synonymous with our famous chicken, and his grandmother developed the signature marinade that keeps fans coming back year after year.

“This festival holds a special place in our hearts,” Tad shared. “We’re incredibly thankful for the people of Versailles and the Poultry Days committee. This event is more than just a weekend—it’s a tradition, and we’re proud to be a part of it.”

From Humble Roots to Historic Heights

Versailles Mayor Todd Dammeyer and Darke County Commissioner Matt Aultman both emphasized how much this festival represents the spirit and heritage of the region. What started as a small gathering is now a multi-day celebration that draws visitors from across the country—including ultimate frisbee teams, chicken lovers, and festival-goers of all kinds.

“This event has always been about community and agriculture,” said Commissioner Aultman. “To see it now certified as the World’s Largest Chicken Barbecue is a testament to 74 years of hard work—and partners like Nelson’s who make it happen.”

A Shared Celebration

While the official title is new, the passion, dedication, and partnership that go into each year’s Poultry Days is not. Nelson’s is honored to provide the meals that fuel the festivities, and we are humbled to be part of something that connects generations of families and brings thousands of people together.

To the volunteers, board members, and community of Versailles—thank you for letting us serve you. We’ll keep firing up the grill if you keep showing up hungry.

Here’s to many more years of tradition, togetherness, and the best barbecue chicken you’ll ever taste.
